State of Play on Emissions Reductions within the Tanker Industry

‘State of play on emission reductions within the tanker industry’, provides a consolidated assessment of the decarbonisation challenge facing the tanker industry combining market context, fleet characteristics, regulatory developments, technological options and operational evidence drawn from INTERTANKO’s GHG Toolbox.
The publication is structured into four main parts:
- Part I: Background and fleet analysis
The status of the global tanker market and fleet composition is explored, with a particular focus on the INTERTANKO fleet profile.
- Part II: Regulatory Status and Development
A comprehensive overview of the key regulatory frameworks that directly or indirectly affect tanker emissions, including international IMO mechanisms, regional measures and emerging national initiatives.
- Part III: Decarbonisation Efforts of the Tanker Industry
Focussing on the technological and operational strategies employed or developed to reduce emissions in tanker shipping. It includes a review of state-of-the-art technologies such as carbon capture, energy-saving devices, and alternative fuels, as well as operational measures.
- Part IV: INTERTANKO GHG Data-Analysis
INTERTANKO’s own assessments, drawing from its internal tools and datasets. This includes emissions inventories, Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) analysis, and evaluations of EU FuelEU Maritime and the Global Fuel Intensity (GFI) indicator.
